One of the most critical needs at base camp is finding a reliable power supply. It used to be that a small, portable solar cell panel would be enough to take care of a few lights and a radio. But today, most climbers bring between 2 – 6 devices that need charging: phones, head lamps, kindles, sat phones, tablets, computers and more. And since downtime at basecamp can be an excersise in killing time, it seems that people not only want to watch one movie a day, but several. Or binge-watch on a series from Netflix. So here in the cloud, (not the cloud that most people are trying to download movies from) the sun gets blocked from charging the batteries of our solar panels, so we still have a problem to provide enough power. So, to try and increase the team's electricity generation, we use a very cool, small and efficient hydro power generator.
At least when we have clouds, we have rain and therefore we have ample water to get the juice we need. Now, onto the next season of LOST. More expedition news to come!
